day 28 {holy spirit}

Ephesians 4:30
Don't grieve God. Don't break his heart. His Holy Spirit, moving and breathing in you, is the most intimate part of your life, making you fit for himself. Don't take such a gift for granted.

it’s not that I forget God has given me His Holy Spirit to live with…it’s just that I don’t always remember this amazing truth.

sure, when things are going really well, I’ll remember that I’ve got a Spirit in me. a Spirit to do life with me, a Spirit that’s an intimate part of my life.

but when things go wrong?

forget about it.

I think a lot of times we keep focused on what Jesus did for us (which is muy importante) but what’s also important is what Jesus said about the Holy Spirit:

But in fact, it is best for you that I go away, because if I don't, the Advocate won't come. If I do go away, then I will send him to you. John 16:7

when ever I read this verse I think about the disciples He was talking to, could you imagine?
you’ve been following around The Messiah for the last 3 years, the man Who turned water into wine, the man Who walked on water, the man Who raised up another man from the dead, and the man Who fead five hundred with a single loaf of bread.

and then He just tells you that He has to leave so His Spirit will come?

I’m almost done with Not a Fan by kyle idleman (highly recommend it) and I just read the chapter about being spirit filled.
without giving too much away I’ll explain the part I loved the most.

he describes how jealous David is of us. yep that’s right, the guy who played with a giant and won…jealous of you and me.

why?

because through out the old testament God is described as being with people, like David. but in the new testament, after Christ, God is described as being in us.

are you catching the hugeness of the Holy Spirit yet?

no, God won’t ever reveal a new 10 commandments to you, but every day when you wake up, He’s right there with you. living inside you to give you powers of truth like you can’t even imagine.

so how do we get to the point where we don’t just acknowledge that the Spirit is within us, but actually live like it?

“being filled with the power of the Spirit begins with an honest acknowledgement of our own weakness”-kyle idleman

Jesus was perfect. and so in His perfectness He’s left us with His perfect Spirit to life with us, so we never have to do it alone.

but that means we have to be real with ourselves and confess that there we have flaws. that means that those areas in our lives that we don’t really want to let God into, need to be kicked open and left open.

so once we kick down the doors, let Him in, we then have to figure out how to do life with the Spirit.

“the idea is that you live with a moment by moment awareness of the Spirit until walking in the Spirit becomes as natural-as habitual-as breathing.
it’s just part of who you are. here’s how it works: the moment you become aware of sin in your life you exhale.
when you exhale you breathe out and repent of your sin. repentance becomes a natural response and clears out space in our hearts for the spirit to fill us.
so the moment you are prideful, jealous, lustful, harsh, selfish, impatient, you exhale and repent of your sin.
the only way to be filled with the Spirit is to empty yourself.
when the Holy Spirit takes up residence, then you should increasingly find that there's isn’t much room for you.
you exhale and breathe out the clutter and darkness of you to make room to be filled with the Spirit”

challenge: ^try Spirit breathing.

Father we thank You for sending Your Holy Spirit to not just live with us, but in us. God I thank You for this amazing gift. forgive us God for when we don’t always remember this truth and help us to breathe with Your Spirit.
amen.
